Conversions, not clicks: Landing pages that sell

In B2B, the leverage isn't in traffic, but in conversion. A good landing page is like a tailored sales pitch – focused, relevant, and optimised for a single goal.

01 — WHY LANDING PAGES

Why landing pages are crucial for B2B

Unlike a website, a landing page has just one objective: to trigger a specific action, such as a consultation, a white paper download or a newsletter subscription. Everything on the page is geared towards this single objective. The extent to which it differs from the homepage can only be reliably demonstrated on a case-by-case basis. In 2019, Instapage ran a test on Google Ads using a brand keyword, comparing a dedicated landing page against the homepage, with traffic distributed evenly between the two. Despite a lower click-through rate, the dedicated page achieved almost three times the conversion rate and cost around a third less per conversion. This is a single test and not an industry average. To put this into context: the Unbounce Conversion Benchmark Report analyses around 41,000 landing pages with 57 million conversions and arrives at a median of 6.6 %, and 3.8 % for SaaS. Building trust is particularly important in B2B.

Infographic: Success Factors for Converting B2B Landing Pages

What makes a B2B landing page convert: Clarity, relevance, trust.

02 — THE SUCCESS FORMULA

The success formula for B2B landing pages

Five building blocks make the difference:

  • Clear focus no navigation, no potential for distraction – a value proposition directly in the headline.
  • Relevance for the target audience Appropriate industry examples and personalised variations precisely match the target audience's language.
  • Visual Hierarchy Headline, bullet points, CTA – the design intuitively guides users through the page.
  • Clear call to action: not „Learn more", but „Book a free call now" or „Download mini-guide".
  • Building trust Customer logos, testimonials, security icons and data protection notices.

/ 03 — TOOLS & TRAFFIC

The right tools and channels

A strong landing page also benefits from the technology behind it:

  • HubSpot & Pipedrive: Lead tracking and CRM integration with the funnel.
  • Unbounce & Landingi: Quick creation and A/B testing.
  • Hotjar: Analysis of scroll behaviour and click paths.
  • LinkedIn Ads & Buffer: Targeted traffic generation and retargeting.

/ 04 — WHAT THE DATA SUGGESTS

What can really be proven

Only around a third of well-designed A/B tests actually improve the target metric. This is reported by Kohavi, Crook and Longbotham in „Online Experimentation at Microsoft“ (2009). Thomke and Ghosh, in their analysis of around 20,000 experiments on the Optimizely platform, found that only about 10 % showed a significant uplift. A/B testing is therefore not a guaranteed source of uplift, but rather a method for identifying false assumptions before they cost the budget money.

The data situation for video is similarly cautious. In 2022, Wistia analysed the 100 pages with the highest traffic on wistia.com between 01/01/2021 and 24/04/2022: Pages with video had an average dwell time of around 6 minutes, while pages without video had an average dwell time of around 4.3 minutes. That's about 1.4 times as much. This is a correlation and not proof of causation, and the data comes from Wistia's own website, not from landing pages.

The advantage of small, targeted optimisations doesn't lie in a guaranteed uplift. It lies in the fact that their effect can be measured individually. After a major relaunch, no one knows which of the many changes had an effect.

In the B2B world, it's not about „more" but „better". A well-thought-out landing page turns attention into a measurable result – a lead, an appointment, a customer. It doesn't need complicated design, but clarity, relevance and trust. If your sales are to grow digitally, it is often the most efficient lever.

05 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions about B2B landing pages

Reflects the actual prompts from ChatGPT, Perplexity & Google AI regarding landing pages in B2B.

What distinguishes a landing page from a website?

A website represents the entire company, whereas a landing page pursues a very specific goal – a single action. Everything on the page is subordinate to this goal.

How much better do dedicated landing pages convert?

There is no reliable industry benchmark for this. In an A/B test conducted by Instapage in 2019 on a brand keyword in Google Ads, the dedicated landing page achieved almost three times the conversion rate of the homepage, despite a lower click-through rate, at around a third of the cost per conversion. This is a single test and not an average figure. To put this into context, the Unbounce Conversion Benchmark Report (covering around 41,000 landing pages and 57 million conversions) cites a median of 6.6 %, and 3.8 % for SaaS.

What makes a B2B landing page successful?

Clear focus, relevance for the target audience, a clean visual hierarchy, a clear CTA and trust elements such as testimonials and privacy notices.
