Tactics & Implementation

How to create a lead magnet that really works

A lead magnet offers potential customers free added value – in exchange for their contact details. The key: it solves a specific problem your target audience has.

Whether it’s an e-book, webinar, checklist or white paper, it’s not the format that matters, but the value it offers. However, it is harder to quantify just how effective a lead magnet is than many of the statistics in circulation would suggest. In the ‘B2B Content Marketing Benchmarks, Budgets and Trends: Outlook for 2025’ report by CMI and MarketingProfs (survey period 25 June to 16 August 2024, n = 980 B2B marketers), 45 % of respondents count e-books and white papers amongst the content types that deliver the best results. 51 % use them. This is a self-assessment by marketers and not a measured lift.

The situation is similarly uncertain when it comes to the question of who is actually willing to provide their contact details. The provider Sopro reports that 76 % of B2B buyers are willing to provide their details in exchange for a white paper. This is a vendor source. Figures from the Demand Gen Report point in the opposite direction: only around one in three provides their telephone number.

01 – Understanding the target audience

Understand your target audience's needs

A successful lead magnet starts with an in-depth analysis of the target audience. Only when you truly understand their challenges and aspirations can you create content that resonates. Conduct targeted surveys (SurveyMonkey, Google Forms), use data from your channels (SE Ranking, HubSpot) and create detailed buyer personas. MarketingSherpa has documented a case study on this involving the software provider Skytap: after working with personas, their sales leads increased by 124 %. This is a single documented case and not an industry-wide benchmark for campaign effectiveness.

An SEO tools provider discovered through a survey that many customers had difficulty with keyword research and developed a free keyword planner from this, which was extremely well-received.

/ 02 – The correct format

Select the correct format

The format must be suited to your target audience and your objectives. E-books are ideal for detailed topics, checklists and templates offering practical, ready-to-use solutions, whilst webinars and videos are best suited to complex or interactive content. Interactive formats such as quizzes or tests are particularly effective at driving engagement. However, Outgrow’s frequently cited 28 % figure refers to an increase in social shares rather than the conversion rate. Regarding conversion, Outgrow’s Interactive Content Benchmark Report 2025 (based on over 50,000 analysed forms) cites a conversion rate of 47.3 % for interactive formats compared with 2.8 % for static formats. Outgrow sells interactive formats itself. The figure is therefore a vendor’s claim and not an independent measurement.

An e-book lead magnet is usually a PDF itself. A comparison between an e-book and a PDF brochure therefore does not separate clear categories. The difference is not made by the file format, but by whether the document solves a specific problem for the target audience or merely describes one's own company.

/ 03 – Benefits & Landing Page

Make the benefit visible

Even the best lead magnet remains ineffective if its benefit isn't immediately clear. Give it a concrete promise and its own landing page that pursues exactly one goal: signing up. Keep the form as short as possible – often, name and email suffice – and make it clear with a strong call-to-action what readers will get and why it's worth it.

04 – Testing & Optimising

Test, measure, improve

A lead magnet is never finished. Observe how many visitors download it and how many of them become genuine leads. Test titles, formats, and hooks against each other and keep what converts better. Small, continuous adjustments will turn a solid offer into a real lead-generating machine over time.

A good lead magnet solves a real problem – and makes the next step easy. Those who understand their target audience, choose the right format, clearly demonstrate the benefits on a landing page, and optimise consistently, will convert attention into qualified leads. Start with a single, really good lead magnet – and build from there.
